Oh I sit in great uncertainty
And listen to the sea
And hear the mermaids’ siren song
And the love they promised me
And I wish that I could take your hand
And walk along the shore
But I know that dream can never be
For he was there before
And all the thoughts I ever had
He thought so long ago
And shared them with you in the past
That I will never know
And my own thoughts whirl in the wind
They fly into the air
They leave me gasping on the sand
And wishing you were there
I think of when you learned to ride
The horses in the field
And taught me that our love was something
That would have to yield
That what was past would never change
Even when you had moved on
Then you packed up your travelling bags
And suddenly were gone.
And now the waves come rolling in
And break upon the shore
No raven now, but the seagull mews
And it still means ‘Nevermore.’
Author notes
Had to go for this one. Not a patch on the real thing, of course and more a song than a poem.

Cohen always managed to capture a mood. How serious was he really?

I'm trying not to cry
This is perfectly formed. It seems to me (because that's the place I'm in) that this about kids growing up and away. I hope I'm wrong cos it would help!! xx And the fabric of this poem is so well sewn that it just sort of fits. Have a threesome..! Too Cheeky!

I like how it does remind me of a Leonard Cohen song. Thank you.
