He tuned in to the radio
and heard their favorite song
visions filled his mind
and he knew she sung along.
He could see her dancing
to their favorite tune
She'd have a smile on her face
knowing he'd be there soon.
fighting is a lonely place
he was happy to at last be back
Even for a short time
he'd left the fighting in Iraq.
In the arms of those he loved
at last to take a breath
Surrounded now by peace and love
away from dust and death.
A picture formed in his mind
he had a clear and perfect view.
Dinner done, dishes washed
then what they would do.
Read the kids a story
makin up for time they'd lost
not seeing his kids grow up
seemed wars greatest cost.
Just then the doorbell rang
only one person it could be
His heart fell as he thought
the unit's needing me.
Tears ran down onto her cheeks
disappointment in her eyes
He wanted to act brave for them
but he had no new disguise.
His feet like lead he lifted them
and walked across the floor
making his way down the stairs
finally opening up the door.
There stood a man with roses
in a box of silver white...
the card said, "Welcome Home I love you"
The champagne's on me tonight.
She stood in the shadows smiling
tears sparkling in her eyes
Mischievious and wonderful
playfulness no mask could disguise.
Turning on the music
she played their favorite song
He took her softly in his arms
and all night they danced along.

After I read this I just think about all the people in the world who don't care about the military.... It's horrible. but anyway. This is a wonderful write and it's great that you could fit so much meaning in to the lines that you have written here.

This poem was absolutely beautiful and it brought tears to my eyes. It really tugs at the heart-strings but in a great way. There are so many times when "duty" call and takes us away from the life we love and know, but to be called out to fight for our country though while gone we may have changed it's the feeling of defending the weak and the ones who can't fend for themselves which gives us the strength to stand up and fight. God bless you always in everything you do and write. Keep up the excellent work my friend. I look forward to reading much more from you.
