Gramme

Missing image
Gramme Georgia was Catawba, my great grand mama
my daddy's side
she loved me so I felt it to my bones.
Gramme was a lover of nuts, berries and fruits
no pork, no pig ever.
Fish and beef.
Gramme had an English garden all around her house.
delicate flowers,
blue berries, black berries grown wild, but contained.
many type figs grew, apples, pears, and damsons ,roses over one hundred years old, Gramme wore her apron could walk about and we would gather and eat our lunch on the grass.
Chestnuts, pecan and walnut trees . Gramme taught me all about those.
Family would never go hungry with these.

My Gramme held me in her arms and read to me she cried and prayed
she knew she would not live to see me raised.
I was special too her, she sensed as a baby I was not loved by momma
the second daughter of a second daughter was not.. my momma was not by her momma.

I was four, when Gramme drove in to Ellenboro to a field to see the Klan march.
Was wicked and no good thing, Cowards hide my Gramme said, she made me a red, black and white set of dolls to play with the next day.. Gramme had help at her place and as was the sixties they were black. I said yes mam and no mam and treated all with respect.

Gramie set me on my first horse, she had some of the first walkers in NC though I doubt she knew. the original kings grant to that farm was ten thousand acres
now it is like my Gramme gone...

I am so glad you could not see when momma had them cut down your trees and destroy the garden.. The farm  house too, make way for progress.. I gave it all away Gramme to the ones who did not love us.. money never took the place of land.

Momma got so very sick they took her too.. no one cares she sits with alzheimer's they're final revenge to return hate for hate to her... they will not tell me where she is my momma..7 years into this I imagine she may be close to dead.My sisters are monsters I no longer know.

Bye my Gramie, I will leave you now with white daisies.
I love you more than ever always will
for ever and ever.
Great Granddaughter

Wow, I don't know if this is true but if it is you need to write a memoir about this fabulous great gramme. I always like your poems you always have something to say about life in the rural south which I don't know anything about. That 's just me, I like to read about what I don't know. I find all people interesting. Your gg sounds so big though, definately you need to write more, this poem or piece kept my interest entirely.

She was special not so emotional like me. woman who made her words count. I adored her.
she braided her long thick hair and it was beautiful she taught me how before she died. I miss her now years later more than ever . Purest of love like from children . Thank you for loving her too.
  • My goodness, I'm speechless and all choked up. My Grandmother was very, very special in my life and she went away much to early from me, though I'm glad she wasn't suffering anymore. I'm glad you shared this, it's so evident all the special feelings/bond you guys shared. This is truly wonderful, you are an amazing person!

  • I take it catawba is indian? Take her soul, and pattern yours after. I remember when my mom stopped some white high school boys who were harrassing some black students. I may have been 10, and was skeered I was about to have to skwaub with those big boys! But they backed down...
  • OH my...we all fell in love with Gramie!

Wasn't that just heaven! Wow...may our all great grand
daughters express themselves so powerfully in tender
regards of what they enjoyed about our lives!
many pearls of wisdom within this poem to enjoy and
    be empowered!
well done! feast of a poem!

    Well constructed

The poem made me imagine the speaker standing at a grave, explaining her relationship with her greatgrandmother to someone else.
Also the critque of 'progress' that detsroyed the land, and ultimately the fsmily.
    I rarely give threes

    Wow.
    This was very sad,
    and beautiful.
And I like how it was
    so detailed,
    it had so many details
    that it made me imagine,
    see in my mind, that
    English garden.
And I also liked that part
where you said that your grandma loved you
because she knew that as the second daughter you
    were not loved,
    Good work here.

I too had a very special and wonderful grandma. My mom was a single mom raising two kids and my grandparents were so involved with us that sometimes it was hard to see were one parent left off and the other two started. They loved me and provided for me what my mom could not. I miss them and I miss there home and the land it sat upon. You wrote an amazingly beautiful piece here.. Best of luck....
