Shake it, Baby

In my fantasy-filled mind,
I can picture a wild party
attended by all of the assorted ‘shakers’
in my glass-filled china hutch.

The salt and pepper Dutch couple,
who never take their eyes off each other,
he’s dressed in blues, she’s in reds
and I can see them ‘cutting the rug’
in gleeful, wild abandon.

The prancing unicorns
with their golden horns;
the owl families,
of which there are many;
cats and kittens of all shapes and colors;
the Victorian women in their ruffled gowns
with matching parasols,
standing by the Elliot Ness cars;
the assorted angels, so delicate
surrounded by lighthouses
from around the nation,
many with beams of color;
the snowmen families,
with reindeer in various poses,
gathered around tiny Christmas trees;
tiny, ornate teapots;
animals of all kinds.

Many sets from the past
all crammed together on glass shelves
and the one ‘king’ presiding over them all
Elvis, in all his glory,
he is not at McDonalds
or on Mars, as reported,
but stands on his throne
overlooking his fans
in my kitchen cabinet,
his expression seeming to say
‘shake it, baby’.

A POW contest entry
Theme: Salt and Pepper Shakers; collections

So many people have collections and a lot of people collect salt/pepper shakers. I have cut....way back, but the way they are arranged, I can 'picture' a party going on at night while we are asleep....lol

      Thank you 'carole21'. When you have a cupboard full of those 'shaker' collections, it does seem sometimes like they could have a life of their own...lol

    Going from a deep and highly emotional poem to something so lighthearted and creative is one of the things I love about judging the PO contests. The imagination within your write is simply wonderful! I can picture this all so clearly that it had me looking at my own china hutch to see who might be “partying” behind my back.

    My only suggestion is to consider breaking your last stanza into two or three sentences, as it seems a bit “run-on“ and requires a hearty breath to get through. A period at the end of the 4th line, maybe? I think you could split it up again once after that, but as always...just a suggestion.

    Thanks so much for sharing this with us in the POW. It’s definitely a write you can (and should) be proud of.

    Good luck and best wishes,
    ~J.

      Thank you so much 'trista' for your lovely comment. This write just 'kind of' happened as I was putting away my snowman set and getting out a non-seasonal set...lol
      I will work with that last stanza shortly (I've been 'under the weather', plus I'm trying to run a contest to celebrate my first year of 'writing')....but I appreciate your suggestions.
      again, thank you for your wonderful comment.

    OMG!

    This has got to be the finest Theme I have seen in quite some time!

    Imagery....Impact....Focus....Thought....etc.....all used in your entry to make this write stand out and shout....Look at me!!!

    You have brought an incredible amount of vision here for us to read and appreciate ~

    I hope you will consider making your way over to my new website when you have the chance ~

    :)

    The Flow is so well done....but there are a few places where I could have stopped a line or two with a comma for more impact and more of that dramtic tone released......but you have done so well......so I am not going to say anymore...except.....Bravo!

    I would have liked to have seen this entry in the POM!

    The best to you and your entry,

        You?.....run out of ideas????

        ....I highly doubt it my Friend ~

        You are a Writer and a Poet......and as long as you have a full Inkwell and a fresh Quill.....and bring your incredible imagination with you.....you will never run out of ideas silly........you only have to slow down and listen to your heart.....it will speak to you and show you everything you need to know

        Please, never give up!

      Thanks so much 'islekine' for the nice comment and applause. I am pleased that this brought some good memories for you. I have thinned and pared my collection by more than half, and it saddens me as looking at them does bring happy memories....oh well.
