Child, my Child

You opened you eyes
The warm light of day should have greeted you
But instead
A cold darkness
Of hiding
Of hoping
That tomorrow will come

Child, my Child
Hide here with me
Child, my Child
I don't want you to see
Child, my Child
All the terrible insanity

I wonder
Do you look like your father?
Hopefully, he's rotting in hell
He disgraced me
My family
My honor
All gone now

Child, my Child
Hide here with me
Child, my Child
I don't want you to see
Child, my Child
All the terrible insanity

I wear my veil

I fear for my life

I hide my child

From evil's sight

She won't suffer

She won't hurt

Like I had to

Child, my Child
Hide here with me
Child, my Child
I don't want you to see
Child, my Child
All the terrible insanity

I could be killed now

I bore an illegitimate child

But he who forced himself upon me

Goes free

Goes again

Into to the world, where it's all for men

Child, my Child
Hide here with me
Child, my Child
I don't want you to see
Child, my Child
All the terrible insanity

Child, my Child

I'm sorry to leave you

Child, my Child

But my time here is through

Child, my Child

Fight for what's true

Author notes

Recently a woman in Pakistan was raped. Her rapist went free, and she was put to death for bringing dishonor to her family. This poem is for her and all the other Muslim women faced by this extremist viewpoint.

It is so sad that in many countries, men who do horrible things go free just because they're men, while innocent women have to get the worst punishment.
Thank you for writing this poem. I truly hope someone will hear your cause and do something about it.
