A Special Bond - You and Mom

From the moment you are conceived you are loved.
You are nurtured in your mothers womb for nine months.
Then you enter the world; a beautiful baby, ten fingers ten toes.
Your mom forgets all the pain as they lay you in her arms.
You feel safe and know that you are loved.

You are now two years old; walking, talking and getting into mischief.
You flush your toy down the toilet and draw a masterpiece on the living room wall.
Mom may scold you but you give her the sad eyes,
She gives you a hug and sends you on your way.

It is now your first day of school, you want to make mom proud.
She walks you to your classroom and tells you not to be afraid.
You tell her you are big now, you give her a kiss and send her on her way.
You wave good bye as you run to meet some of the other kids, you yell I love you.

The years have flown by, you are now a junior in high school.
You got your drivers license and a car.
You and your date are going to the prom.
Mom tells you to be careful, you promise you will.
You give her a kiss, tell her you love her and you won't be too late.

About 11:30 pm there's a knock on the door.
Mom answers it and begins to cry.
The officer said you were in an accident, a drunk driver hit your car head on.
There were no survivors he explained, mom insisted she had to see you.
He took her to the accident site, they were about to close your body bag.
Mom walked up to it took you in her arms for the very last time.
With tears streaming down her face she kissed you one last time and told you she loves you.

Once again she feels pain, but it is of sadness.
She will never hold you again, she will never again see your smile.
Now all mom does is sit and cries, her only child has past away.
You were only ten minutes from home, ten minutes from being safe.

WOW, this is so sad and full of pain. As I was reading this, I can remember when I was growing up how I never missed the chance to say goodbye and I always tell her that I would be back. never really thinking, even now, that something could happen and I wouldn't be around. or how she would feel if I was no longer on this earth.
this poem made me think and at the same time, brought me to tears.
What every parent dreads, the knock on the door, that phone call, or a letter in the mail saying that their child is no longer alive.
absolutely amazing, thought provoking and heart wrenching poem that you have written.

    good luck in the contest.
