In the Midst of the Cold Woods

Missing image

Standing alone
in frosty
hushed silence

the air is heavy
with a crisp pine aroma
and the musky scent

of earth

and leaves tucked away
under winter’s blanket

A raven caws overhead
as it soars
in lazy loops

from tree to tree
as if  scolding me
for my

unexpected
and odd presence
in his domain as

the snow falls
like wet cotton balls
upon the sleepy forest.

I have visions very similar to this outside of my window here most mornings at this time of year very near the bottom of this lonely mountain. You have captured it exactly in well chosen, beautiful words and they blend so well with the photo.

Very good picture and excellent reflections on it. What I like about your poetry is the way you choose musical words and place them together. The effect is simply superb. Congrats!

Breath-taking. And it is your own picture??? It makes me miss living in a small town called Hayfork. I experienced several winters there, and while I never appreciated how much I was freezing... I was always infatuated with the snow, and the way it just seemed to paint its surroundings. Oh, what I'd do to smell snow again!

Eloquently written. I doubt anyone could have done it better.
