Rondeau of the Reed

treading eden, towards my eternal Home

do not remind me
of the mortality
of this Body
by telling me:

you are beautiful

do not breathe:

you are perfectly poised;
love made visible
in flesh;
housing a well rounded Soul

do not sigh:

i love you

when you shun
looking into my eyes
because you fear detection
of your lies

if you really love me,
this earthly apparition
forever thirsty for purity,
call me then:

rose, thorn, cross, rostrum,
rose of Sharon, rock

because this reed rages
against that lust
which cages my love
in blood and vein
in broken wings
paludism and pain

and if you do love me
do not punish me
by ignoring
my purpose

do you not know
my heart dwells in forgiveness
and release ... and wants to heal
all shattered souls?

thus do not say:

this body is but flesh

I am vulnerable
to this vulgarity
this body is the sacred dome
of Light
where roaming souls
find rest

so if you breathe:

i love you

and your song
surrenders to the wind,
then make this dome
your home
and know: this reed
breathes Love

and if you leave me
in the end
in my lonely landscape
where birds and breezes
uplift my soul on waving wings
singing my forlorn songs

know then: this is the final test -
this Sanctum
is my only earthly rest ...

this rondeau of the Reed.

Author notes

NATURE AND SPIRIT  are closely connected in cosmic awareness. I love to use nature to define myself. I write from both my natural core, and my spiritual awareness IN RELATION TO NATURE. "Tula was regarded as the center of the world, the opening toward the supernatural world of the vertical, as well as the pivot of the horizontal sociopolitical cosmos. ....It was the sacred centre from which issued a way of life that perfectly integrated the rhythms of the cosmos and human affairs."  And:  "... the people of Tula had learned that the secret of peace was the unity of all things."

Very nicely written and with much depth. Loved it ... I only question the following line: "surrender to the wind," I would think that it would be surrender(s)to the wind?? All in all a most beautiful sharing of thoughts that are near and dear to my heart! Glad I perused this contest! joy

You have a lot going on in this poem Myra. I know you have changed in voice somewhat, but this poem speaks well of you that I've come to know. I'm enjoying your early ones.

Sorry C, It is Afrikaans, my mother tongue ... I live in South Africa. Roughly translated it means: Soothing heals the broken reed so that it can sing. Thanks for visiting. Myra

Die geknakte riet kan ook sing ... met die streling van herstel.
