Condra stared at her mother in silence.
"W-what? What do you mean ghosts? What do you mean angry? What are you talking about?" Condra asked hurriedly. She was in a rush for answers. Though she had a pretty good idea what her mother was talking about.
"Well, they got me pregnant, and they beat me every day. And then when I complained and asked Cletis about it, he well...." Daisy drifted off into silence. It was obvious that she was traumatized by what had happened during her stay at the new house.
"That's...awful," Condra finally managed to say.
"But, there's more," Daisy said fearfully.
"What more could there be?" Condra asked, quite confused; she couldn't see how things could get any worse than this.
"Well, your father's being possessed by the ghosts."
Condra looked at her mother. Surely she was just kidding? Her father possessed? Was Daisy trying to cover up for something? Her father had always been evil. But then again, Condra hadn't been home for months, and obviously a lot had happened that made sense in her mother's explanation...
"You seriously think he's possessed?" Condra asked of her mother. "What makes you so sure?"
"Well, when I said the ghosts were beating me, I mean your father was. But there was no reason for him to, and he's never reacted so violently. Plus, I've received the same beating from invisible hands," Daisy said, beginning to look a little teary.
Condra sat in thought for a moment. She recalled all of her strange experiences and how she couldn't explain any of them to her parents. All of them had been so paranormal and odd, and quite frankly, her mother was making sense. Then, it finally hit Condra. The answer to all of this came flooding into her head.
"Chris, where are we?" Condra asked quickly.
"Uh...somewhere near Missouri. I figured I'd head--" but Condra cut him off.
"Well, turn around and head back to our house."
Daisy and Chris looked at Condra with stunned looks on their faces. That is, until Chris almost drove off the road.
"What are you talking about Condra? We can't go back there! It's dangerous!" Daisy said, her eyes finally brimming with tears.
"We have to. I know what to do, and I've got it all worked out! We need to go back! Trust me!"
Chris looked at her uncertainly. Condra gave him a small, reassuring smile and Chris looked a little bit more assured.
"Ok, I'll head back to Kentucky," Chris said, grabbing the map in the passenger's seat and looking for their way back into Wilkhall, Kentucky.
Daisy was stunned. She sat with tears spilling onto her face and her whole body shook.
"We can't go back, Condra! Please, no! Stop Chris! Keep going wherever we were headed before!" Daisy cried. She tried to grab Chris's hands and steer the wheel off of the exit he was heading to, but it was too late.
"Why Condra?! Why?!" Daisy pleaded. She was beginning to look a little demented.
"Mom, you have to trust me. Believe me, after seeing you today, I would never mean you any harm."
