The Cobra's Dance

As I dance to music of the Middle-East.
As I perform the dance of the cobra.
Swiftly...

I move my hips in rhythm with
The drumbeats blended with
Arabian percussion..

My graceful hands create
Unexplained shapes in the air
As I bellydance with intense ecstasy..

Smoke of incense, the smell of Myrrh
Like mists - a breath of intoxication:
It is my invisible cloak..

My red silken hip scarf
Golden headpiece and tiny bells
Decorating my revealing outfit..

Ringing in the air like a melody.
In tune with my cobra's dance, my song
My joy and music..

My skin shining beneath
The starlit sky of the Arabian Night.
A red veil covering half of my face..

I dance lustfully like an enchantress.
A seductress, a Mistress of Bellydance.
Completely lost in my senses..

I dance across hills of sand -
The desert, the thieves, the Sultan:
My audience, my watchers in front of me..

Smoky air caressing my skin.
Embracing the goddess within.
I am in touch with my soul..

The spirit of the cobra
Taking form in my movements
Making me flexible..

Making me flow like the Nile.
Smoothly, gently, I soar
I soar! I manifest the divine!

The breeze of the night
Touching my skin like
The hand of a man..

Reaching my chest, my breast.
Sliding its arms around my waist.
Claiming me forever..

As I perform the cobra's dance.

Author notes

I love bellydancing. I had always wanted to write about it but never found the right time until now.

Very interesting write here, incorporating bellydancing with the Snakes movement, I like it. It's very rhythmic within itself and it conjures beautiful imagery into the mind.

I love it. At first I was scared it was going to be something from my childhood. (Pentecostal snake dancers!) Luckily it was not. I think that the art of belly dancing is gorgeous. I personally never learned how but I love watching girls do so. I admire the approach you took on this... not cliche at all. You most definitley took me by surprise. Thank you so much for entering, Good luck.

An excellent verbal dance to match the subject.
This brought to mind both the raqs sharqi (belly dance) and the image of the cobra dancing to the snake charmer's music as you probably intended given the title.
Well done and good luck in the contest.

What an amazing write for a rather challenging topic! What an amazing write--period! I loved the images you created, and the way you incorporated the "cobra's dance" into the whole thing. Excellently done with a perfect mix of imagery, personifictaion, and rhythm. Great work, poet!
