receipts and refunds

twelfth night approaches;

she is clearing the decks of more than holly
and christmas tree needles that stick
in her socks and the dog's paws

she is not surprised her shoulder
aches from so much baggage
a filofax full of friends
who never ring,

still a keepsake of memories,

and so heavy now

 appointment cards for the

doctor, dentist, assorted therapists -

she needs to know she

is keeping well

on track with all her "stuff"

a cloth she uses to clean her glasses;

she needs to see where she is going

eight assorted pens and pencils;

and their tops; gone astray;

a lip balm she had lost,

she hadn't really missed it -

she never kisses anyone now

it's a long way to the bottom:

every receipt

 for everything

she bought last year

lurks, just in case

it did not fit...

she sometimes feels she deserves

more than a refund ...

    this sounds like my bag. sometimes i get crazy and rip out everything i don't want to see anymore... and it ends up on the passenger side floor of my car. meh. why do we collect unhappy things?

    Very moving and well done poem. This is well worth any gold trophy that can be awarded. I love how it ends with the tension of the poem resolved so nicely.

    I like the pine needle part in socks, so many can relate and feel that little pinch...lol

    a refund...it's hard to return, or perhaps let go of all these things that we 'keep' with us, in the bag or over years...

    i love this, i always visit a poem of yours for such a long time, they always really make think and ponder life
