The wild little furball attacks repeatedly,
Pounces, claws pressing dangerously on my veins;
Then looks up innocently and purrs.
So cute and innocent for such a little monster.
Natures highly efficient killing machine,
All muscles, claws, teeth, quick instinct.
Who could love such a beast?
Only another super-efficient killer: humankind.
The things that come into my head,
As I hold my sweet furry baby kitty cat,
And lick the blood from my punctured hand.
Author notes
Played with a friend's kitten tonight, and have the little holes in my hand to show for it.

i am convinced that the little ones have the sharpest claws - much like the idea that baby rattlesnakes have more potent poison than the adults – no one expects the babies to be so dangerous, but ask the parent of a newborn who has just contracted diarrhea and they’ll let you know just how dangerous infants can be. good luck in the contest,

Life during wartime!
I'm not sure if this is a poem or a very short, witty essay. Having said that, I'm reminded of what I read at "Oldpoetry" about Carl Sandburg's "Chicago"; 80-some years ago when he wrote it nobody was sure if it was really a poem or not! Today it's a a cornerstone of American poetry and a touchstone of Modern poetry. So I guess I,ll have to ere on the side of "poem" here for "Punctured Hand".
You did a fine job of lining up all the contredictions and incongruencies that are "a kitten" and deftly turning them into a metaphore for all the contredictions and incongruencies that are "us". You wrote a warm and endearing piece with just the barb of a kitten's claw!

I like it! I love cats a lot.
My favorite line was
So cute and innocent for such a little monster!
