fireworks scared the ducks away
put them in a panic.
flew overhead as we ducked under a roof
to avoid the bird shit.
surrounded by smiling strangers
but they're not happy.
Jenny's husband works across the lake,
Christine can't get a call through to hers.
The trashcan's caught fire again out front.
Far away from family and friends
working new years eve.
People getting angry when we run out of toy necklaces.
getting kissed...more like slobbered on...by drunks.
dont touch me.
Maggie's worked a double shift, she looks ready to faint.
An angry boyfriend just before 12
punched Tina in the face.
Its a holiday
but the world is still the world
people are still just people.
still ugliness is everywhere.
what does it matter?
resolutions made but never kept
dreams never realized.
silent beside those screaming, crying, kissing, lauging...fools.
all I can think of as the clock strikes 12:
nothings changed.
Happy New Year.

I have always found New Year's to be depressing myself.. not in this way, I'd rather be ignorant to the fact that nothing changes over the festive season, I like the security of it. It depresses me because time just doesnt stop ticking. Strangely though I know a Maggie who worked a double shift on New Year, that's kinda cool.. well Im rambling now, I enjoyed reading your poem, it's a little too real though :'(
