Just Like Old Times

Last night I saw you for the first time in months
Your eyes met mine and held them
And I dared not look away.
I sat next to you and we talked.
Over the loud music we strained to hear each other
And laughed.

Asking if you wouldn't mind me helping
I was afraid you'd say no
But you smiled and said you'd enjoy the company.

As the night grew on you became warmer
Losing your public face like you used to

You'd look at me and your eyes would get bigger

All the time I sat next to you
I wanted to wrap my arms around you

You didn't know how much I worried

On the drive home you played the song I've loved
For many a year
And apologized for not playing more songs that I liked
Saying that you hoped this would make up for it.

Then I looked at the laptop and saw the next song
The same one you sang that night we walked in the blizzard
Almost one year ago.
Hand in hand for miles past the stranded cars and icy puddles
On the quietest back road in town.

It wasn't until last night that I realized
Just how much I missed you
If only I could've said "I love you"
