America.
the last shining light
in an ever
darkening world.
Still, I see shadows
of past failures
in history knocking
at our door.
America is a Republic
that somehow changed
to a democracy as
history is forgotten.
It is always that way.
Washington, Jefferson
and Franklin were scholars,
knew of the failures of
Greece and Rome.
They made the Individual
first in their rules for
government servitude
to the people.
We call them heroes
and deny their wisdom
for the sake of society.
But now it has all
been turned around.
The one,
is sacrificed
for the many.
In America,
the many is more
important than me.
The Republic is only
a word. A dream.
A spirit of freedom
slowly destroyed
by the rule of
the majority.
The Magna Carta
The Bill of Rights
Two pieces of paper
government and society
must find their
way around to achieve
social equality.
The sad thing is,
democracy dies.
Majority cannot rule
without respecting the
individual.
The Bill of Rights
is being laid waste
for Homeland Security.
America's Motto used
to be 'Don't Tread On Me.'
Now we walk
over ourselves never
feeling the hand of
the oppressor
on our necks.
In democracy, freedom
dies slowly.
History shows
it always dies.

Wow! Excellent!!! I cannot agree more!!! Wonderful!!

-
Very well stated.
Hope
is rooted in memory. We remember getting help in the past, and that gives us hope for the future.
If we forget our past there will now, therefore, be no hope.

Well said and true.
Plus, the ideals that our country's founders put forward were not greed and selfishness, which is what we see today as politicians wish to enrich themselves and gain power.

If only Rustynite was alive to see his poem spotlighted!! It is a wonderful expression indeed

So true.
I must say each entry makes me very glad we had this contest. I do find so much about this that says the Preamble so clearly. Thanks for being on target.

Ah a political rant .... I feel for this land as I do believe the star is fading and this nation..we do not learn from our mistakes in history...rome rose and feel the mighty empire did the same...china closed its doors and many other nations have had the spotlight in the sun ...
you raise points to ponder and a venting of spleen it is hope it makes you feel a little better and may be even give people some incentive to vote...Nicely said.

This piece makes an interesting statement and is almost a speech rather than a rant, really something that reaches out and grabs you and makes you think about it. I enjoyed this very much

Excellent Work
Easy read with firm meter. The scheme is brilliant but then there's the words. The revolution is coming and we whom see it are in favor to reinstate the individual. Anyway this poem is deserving of honor, very well done. Good luck in the contest.

True Words Spoken!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
These are true words spoken here David!!!! It seems the truth and beauty of these words have gotten lost over the years, everything has become "If it feels good do it" mentality so to speak. You need to have this spot lighted and let many see the truth brought front center once again!!!Thanks for sharing the way things should be with me tonight!!!~~Toni~~
