Couldn't

The sun rises on a new day
But I am still reeling from the previous.
He packed his bags and left me
Told me, he cannot live with the insecurities.
I could not understand his words,
I had been secure from the start
I knew he was the one.
He couldn’t look at me to begin with
When he said that they were his.
He said that he had loved me every day
But life was leading him another way.
I tried to tell him he was wrong,
I’d show him, if he stayed.
But he continued to pack, saying:
‘If not today, then it would be tomorrow
Or the day after that, it’s for the best.
I couldn’t see his thoughts,
Couldn’t comprehend the situation.
Until 3 a.m. arrived and I reached for him in our bed.
He wasn’t there
He had left
It hit me then,
He was right.
I loved him
And he loved me,
But we couldn’t be.
