The Face of Death

Tonight I looked into the pallid, withered face of death;
a cold chill went down my spine and left me short of breath.
I swallowed the pain and broken pieces of a reality so shattered;
so caught up in a web of lies, it was as if nothing else mattered.
An empty void created inside, to hide all the dreary thoughts;
agony eats inside what is real, and now I know that I've fought
a losing battle, I have to give up, even after how hard I tried,
for what good is a life lived in emptiness everyday, as if my heart has died?
I sit on the edge, contemplating how I wasn't even prepared,
for I looked into death's face tonight-and realized I wasn't scared.

Author notes

suicidal overdose-point made

I wish I could say this was a work of fiction, but sadly it is not. I slipped back last week and tried to OD on antidepressants, and I don't even know why I did, but it happened. I went through a good three year bout of depression when I was younger and tried to then, too, and thankfully didn't succeed. Hopefully I'll never feel like I need to do that ever again...

    Thank you for entering my contest for DREARY poems. This is not very dreary in my opinion. Depressing yes. Dreary no.

    Very powerful!

    I like this. Your rhyme works well and doesn't seem forced. Interesting how the first two lines and last line are paradoxical. They seem to contradict, but make sense (especially with the explanation in your author notes). Well done. Good luck in the contest.
