Working the graveyard shift put a serious damper on Tara’s social life. When she was working, or getting ready for work, all of her friends were just getting off or hanging out. It was incredibly frustrating to be sitting at the front desk of a hotel in the middle of the night, knowing that if you left for an hour, nothing would happen.
Tonight, though, just when Tara was outlining some crucial details of Alyanna’s life, Mr. Aaron Kilgary walked up to the desk wearing a towel and swimming trunks.
“Can you point me to the pool?” He asked. Tara could see his muscles ripple under his skin, and could feel the wonderfully bad things he was doing to the butterflies in her lower abdominal region.
“It’s that way,” she replied, pointing down the hallway to her left. “But it’s only open for another forty-five minutes.” It was 11:15 pm, just fifteen minutes into her shift and exciting things were already happening!
“Thanks, hon.” He winked at her (such a common occurrence these days) and sauntered off to the pool. Thoughts of him dripping wet and wearing something that could easily become undone swam in Tara’s head until Kayla asked sweetly, “ Having fun day dreaming about Mr. Hottie Armani?” Tara blushed, also a common occurrence, and quickly went back to looking like she was busy.
“No, I was – I mean – I… Alright, fine, I was.” She stuttered, embarrassed at being caught.
“It’s alright, hon, I do it too.” Kayla grinned at her.
“Hmph.” Tara fiddled with her pen, trying to find something to say, and failing miserably. An awkward silence followed until Kayla said, “If you want to go talk to him while he’s all wet and dripping, I won’t mind.”
“You know? I think I will!” Tara was far too excited about the prospect of seeing that amazing body in just a swimsuit.
She hurried down the hallway in the direction of the pool, pausing only when she passed a mirror on the wall and saw how disheveled her hair was. After a moment’s pause to rearrange everything into something a little more sexy than a simple ponytail, she hurried off to the pool.
“I am shocked to see you here.” Aaron said, voce dripping with sarcasm.
“I’m glad to see you too, Mr. I-swim-at-eleven-o’clock-at-night.” Tara replied.
“You makin’ fun o’ me?” He scrunched up his face on one side and squinted at her, making her laugh.
“Yes. Yes, I believe I am.” She giggled.
“Is the front desk so boring or am I so interesting that you have to interrupt my work out?” He asked as he came up to the edge of the pool.
“Yes.” Tara said.
“Yes to what?” He asked.
“Yes to both questions. The front desk is incredibly boring. So much so that I think I could leave it for an hour and nothing would happen. Nothing at all.” She sighed and plopped gracelessly on the nearest lounger.
Aaron laughed and reached for her hand. He took it, placed a kiss on her knuckles and said, “Well, then its glad I am that I can provide you some entertainment.” The butterflies were having a grand ole time somewhere down by her pelvis.
“So how much longer will you be in town doing… whatever it is you’re here for?” She asked while picking at her cuticles, something she only did when she was incredibly nervous.
“I will be here for three more days. As for what I’m here for, my father is the CEO of ZeeCorp, which sells wholesale computer parts to small business owners. Exciting, I know, but I get to travel and be a sales rep for him, which isn’t a bad gig.” He sighed and pushed back from the edge of the pool, floating out into the center to tread water while they talked.
“Oh. That sounds… interesting.” Tara didn’t quite know what to say.
“Psh. Totally! The only good thing about it is that I get to travel wherever he wants me to go and stay there for free.”
“That’s awesome. Have you been anywhere interesting?” Tara glanced down and saw that she had made a mess of her cuticles. Her manicurist would not be happy.
“Well, last week I was in Tallahassee, Florida, which was not fun. And the week before that I was in Spokane, Washington, also boring. Tucson is the most interesting place I’ve been in about two months.” He raised an eyebrow at her.
“Well, I suppose compared to Tallahassee and Spokane, Tucson would be pretty entertaining. I would disagree that it’s interesting, but whatever floats your boat.” She chewed off a rough edge of cuticle while glancing at him from underneath her eyelashes.
“You don’t like Tucson?” He asked, seeming surprised.
“Hmph. No.” She snorted.
“Why not? There’s so much stuff to do here and the people are usually so nice.” He was being sincere.
“I dislike this god forsaken town because it’s hot, dry, dusty, and there is absolutely no night life whatsoever. Which is usually why you can find me working here during the night, as opposed to taking a normal job during the day. The only good places to go are Safehouse and DV8, but Safehouse closes at two, and DV8 is twenty one and older most nights.” She sighed.
“You’re not twenty one yet?”
“No, unfortunately not. But my birthday is in about six weeks and I plan to party it up!” Tara brightened, sitting up straighter and pushing her hair back from her face. She secretly hoped that he would be in town then and that she could invite him to whatever shindig she cooked up with her friends.
“Well, hopefully I will be in town then and we can party it up together.” Aaron had swum back over to the edge of the pool and was now looking at her with a sense of hopeful yearning in his gorgeous face.
“Maybe. I will have to see what I’m doing that week and who’s available. It’s gotten harder to plan parties now that my friends and I have graduated high school and are on different schedules.”
“Just let me know and I will be there.” Inwardly, she squealed like a little girl.
“I don’t have any way of getting a hold of you.” Oh, she was being sneaky now.
“That’s alright, I will give you my phone number and you can call me.” Yesss! Success.
“Okay, well, have to get back to the front desk, but you can leave it there for me when you’re done with your workout.” The butterflies in her stomach and lower pelvic region were fluttering around happily.
“Okay,” he pushed himself out into the middle of the pool again. “I will do that. You have a nice night Miss Tara.”
“Same to you Mr. Aaron Kilgary.” She grinned and tried not to skip as she headed back to the lobby.
