A gift is a gift whatever it is

This Christmas, I got a hammock from my sister
but it didn't quite reach between the fences
I have no trees so woe is me
where am I supposed to tie it

So I took it back and swapped it for
a freestanding one instead
but alas once again I have to exchange it
as I keep falling out

The salesman suggested I get a garden swing instead
so I take his advice and off I go
with my new found treasure in the trolley
unloaded it into my car and head for home

Once home I unpack the car
and start to assemble the swing
darn, the instructions are in French
(gee don't they know I can only read English, thank goodness they gave pictures too!)

After several hours of toiling
the swing seems finally ready
but how do I get up that high
with my short legs?

I examine my creation and compare
once more to the picture on the box
Now I see what is the matter
the swing is upside down

I take it all apart and jam it back in the box
and head back to the store
"Please Sir can I get a massage pillow instead
my bones ache so from all the extra strain"

He loooks at me and smiles and says with a mischievous grin
"Would you like me to come over and plug it in for you
to make sure it's done just right?
and would you like some granny slippers too to massage your feet after all this walking?"

I look at him and we both laughed
Everyone stopped and stared
then he said with a grin,
"Can I ring your sister and suggest a gift voucher next year, to save you all this trouble?"

My sister's gift may have been given in all sincerity
but I bet she never dreamed it would cause such a fuss
so no matter the gift, believe me,
it may be better to just keep it than try to exchange it

Absolutely true! I am totally appreciating your message and laughing at how much trouble this poor soul had in getting her gift finalized. A darling poem that comes packed with smiles! >>>>

Oh this is an excellent story about returning one gift that leads to a fiasco of stress! I think the massage pillow and the foot massager definitely was the way to go, unless you plant some trees and wait a few 20 or so years
Excellent poem, enjoyed it very much!
