The Snowman

It was a cold and bitter winter, snow lay thick upon the ground,
the frosty air was biting and breathed not a single sound.
clear skies filled with diamonds, no cloud marred the milky way,
the moon shone full and brightly, lighting icicles on display.

but in the middle of the garden, a great mound of snow was piled,
surrounded by the footprints, of a young, warm booted child.
beside the snow a top hat lay, some coal and a carrot too,
a woollen scarf across the pile and on the ground a pair of shoes.

bathed in sparkling moonlight, the snow gently began to stir
I truly could not believe the sight, which before me then occurred.
the pile began to take on form,  legs, head and arms took shape.
hat perched high atop his head, scarf round his neck was draped.

just then he turned with outstretched arm and grinned a massive smile,
"Come on" he urged, as I sat in awe, "let's have fun here for a while"
Looking into his gentle face, his eyes blinked as black as coal,
I took his hand and slowly towards the gate we began to stroll.

"Hold on tight, and don't let go" he whispered in my ear,
"I'll take you on a magic journey, just hold on and have no fear"
I felt a tingle course up my arm, as he gently held my hand,
I simply smiled and nodded, to let him know I understand.

The snowbound earth dropped away, my feet no longer on the ground,
my snowfriend and I were flying, towards the stars without a sound.
over fields, rivers and mountain tops we flew with gathering speed,
only once i turned my head to see in the distance the garden recede.

Climbing higher and ever higher, we flew right past the moon,
floating brightly in the starlit sky like a giant silver balloon.
We slid along the milky way catching stars as we sped on by
on our magical winters journey across the night-time sky.

we played all night amongst the stars, til in the distance saw a glow,
my snowfriend turned to me and said, "I'm sorry, but it's time to go"
The sun will soon be rising and we must get home before the dawn
once more a tingle ran up my arm, and I soon began to yawn.

my eyelids became very heavy, and I just could not stay awake,
the stars and moon slowly faded, my tiredness I couldn't shake.
I floated into dreamland, our journey still running through my head,
To wake so puzzled in the morning tucked up snugly in my bed.

Had the whole thing been a dream, or had I flown across the stars,
with my snowfriend from the garden, past the moon and on to mars?
Rushing out into the garden, I saw a heap of snow upon the ground ,
it was melting around the edges, the thaw had surely come around.

I walked up even closer and saw where my snowman lay
slowly melting in the morning sun, much to my dismay.
It surely had been just a dream, snowmen do not talk or think,
but as I looked beneath his soaking hat, I swear I saw him wink.

i love this, it reminds me so much of childhood innocence and Richard Wilbur’s poem
“Boy At The Window” where he writes,
“Though frozen water is his element,
He melts enough to drop from one soft eye
A trickle of the purest rain, a tear
For the child at the bright pane surrounded by
Such warmth, such light, such love, and so much fear.”

    blessings and best wishes,

    ~r.

Now this should go to an editor

and an illustrator and be published as a children's glossy book! Congratulations on your narrative and miles of rhyme and imaginative fervour.
I read what Dee said and she is not "kidding".

    Fantastic

Truly brilliant Ann, as always. You really have a knack for writing poetry for children. My artist friend never came through with it but you should find someone who can draw, your poems with drawings would be a success.

It is a good job the snowman here was lying down, at least that way we couldn't see his snowballs.

awwwwwwww Ann I loveddddddddddddddd loved this!! This has got to be my second favorite that you have done!
You've got to make a book! I'd buy one! The way you ended is how I loved it. You can even easily do a part two with this lol. That would be very wild to wake up and see the snowman melted that you thought you dreamed about!
