Chap. 10
After Jason and Isabella were done talking, Serenity went back to Esmera without getting caught wandering in the halls alone. She lied back down and listened to Esmera’s soft breathing until she fell asleep.
Serenity awoke first in the morning, and lightly tapped Esmera to make her wake. She opened one eye and greeted Serenity. Good morning, Serenity. Was your night pleasant?
Serenity nodded, and then looked around for Jason or Isabella. Esmera noticed her looking, and explained, They’re not here. They went to do Jason’s business he mentioned yesterday.
Serenity felt relieved. She then thought about telling Esmera everything and finally decided to do so. “Esmera, listen. I have to tell you something.”
Yes?
“Last night, I heard—” but Serenity couldn’t finish, because at that moment, came Isabella’s voice.
“Serenity! Esmera! Rivon! Shinku! Come here immediately!”
Serenity sighed, then got up with Esmera by her side and started walking toward where Isabella’s frantic voice could be heard.
Isabella was pacing in front of her throne when Serenity and Esmera came in. a few moments passed and Jason followed by Shinku came running in. “What happened? Is everyone okay?” Jason demanded.
Isabella nodded, her lip trembling. “I heard from General Dith that Rellark. . . .Rellark. . . . .Is coming soon….To Albyra.
“What?” Jason muttered.
Isabella nodded and continued pacing. This shouldn’t be happening, Esmera said. When is he coming?
Isabella looked grave. “In a week.”
Jason muttered something under his breath, and then yelled, “Well, we have to get Serenity out of here! How many men or Malks is he brining? Can we trust Dith that that information is true?”
Isabella nodded once again, and then said something before Jason could yell. “I have a plan. Serenity and Esmera can leave with you and Shinku in two days because Serenity at least has to know how to use and shoot a bow. Then you four will leave for Mirthira and I will be here, stalling them so they won’t catch you. I suggest that you guys hurry. We don’t have much time.”
Serenity and Jason were once again outside with a couple of bows and arrows. Shinku had again taken Esmera away to train her while Jason trained Serenity. Jason started teaching Serenity all the parts, but Serenity’s mind wasn’t paying attention. Jason looked up, and seeing that Serenity wasn’t paying attention, spoke up. “Serenity, what’s wrong?”
Serenity shook her head, took a breath, and asked Jason, “Jason, who is Islaria?”
Jason looked shocked, and so did Serenity. Jason shook his head, and then questioned her. “How do you know that name?”
Serenity shrugged. “Never mind.”
Jason still had the look of shock upon his face, then snapped out of it and continued to name the parts of the bow, but this time a little bit more slowly. Serenity once again learned pretty quickly, but all through the lesson, she felt Jason’s eyes on her. Jason taught Serenity how to shoot, and Serenity shot over ten feet. Jason was impressed.
At dawn, Shinku and Esmera came flying back to Jason and Serenity. Shinku had continued teaching Esmera essential tools to surviving in the wild. Both Jason and Shinku had rushed their teachings because of the shock they had found out earlier this morning. They went back to the castle and started discussing Jason and Serenity’s journey the next day.
“Isabella,” Jason murmured softly, “May I be excused? I have some things to take care of.”
Isabella nodded solemnly, and Jason got up and walked out. Isabella then turned to Serenity. “I heard that today you questioned Jason about Islaria.”
Serenity looked down guiltily and flushed. “Yes, and I really am sorry.”
Isabella sighed, and then asked, “Do you want to know what happened?”
“Will Jason get mad?”
Isabella nodded, but then said, “I cannot tell you the whole thing, as I swore I wouldn’t.”
Serenity thought, As long as I get some information.
Isabella sat back in her chair and started explaining. “You see, Serenity, Jason and Islaria’s connection is broken. They used to be the best of friends, no, that’s incorrect. They used to be like brother and sister. But then one day someone Islaria and Jason loved very much died. The Islaria Jason once knew was gone, and he started blaming himself for what had occurred. Islaria found out that Jason was blaming himself, and she started telling him that it wasn’t his fault what-so-ever.
“Then Jason turned hard and he started treating Islaria very badly, such as yelling at her. Jason would always go and sit at the cliff where he and Islaria would hang out and talk in the past. Then I tried to find a way to snap him out of it. He was a good friend to you in the past, so I assigned him the mission as to brining you back. He accepted and, since you arrived here, he has lightened up, but he still remembers what happened.
“I cannot continue anymore, and I apologize. If you want to know the rest, you will have to ask either Jason or Islaria herself.”
Serenity thanked Isabella, then looked out the window and was surprised to find that the sun was starting to set. “Isabella, when so I leave?”
“Either tomorrow or the day after tomorrow. But I suggest the day after tomorrow, because Jason still feels as if you need more training. With that, I bid you good night.”
