Of Forests and Plains

Missing image

The mightiest tree standing
in the greatest forests
would give way
to plains for grazing
if not for its roots.

I am Deer Trail - determined.
Timid at first glance,
skirting edges,
I follow - Yet broaden paths
to bear and protect the young.

You are my rising sun, my talon;
Bear Claw, leader of our people;
you rest your sorrow in my bosom –
your weakness in my strength.
I am Deer Trail - determined.

Winter woes contained:
Your bows were strong – Fearless.
Buckskin sacrifices tanned,
sewn, sowing our needs together
to bring forth spring's early crops.

We sing of our ancestors
lest we forget our pride;
forget
loving spirits who guide
hands and hearts –
Asking only that we honor their sacrifices.

I am Deer Trail,
determined
that our people will survive
in a world that is changing,
moving away from both forest and plain.

    I really enjoyed this poem so much, the content is brilliant and the partnership between two people shown as strong and proud with the woman as being the equal, but different, to her man. Timeless in it's perfect unison between two people but with the flavour and mood of the past. My personal favourite background of the two young lovers but it is your words that are important and the background just adds that extra touch. Extremely wonderful write

    Excellent piece. I gently flowed from one line to the next knowing and feeling the strength in this woman, hearing her spirit whisper...

    The repetition of "I am Deer Trail - determined" just adds so much strength and power to this poem.

    Brilliantly crafted from your talented and creative mind my dear. So very moving. A pleasure to read and enjoy.

    This is beautiful and has a bittersweet intonation for the native American but it shows a wonderful pride and strength. This poem has a wonderful cadence that enhances the imagery. Well done!

    Love,
