It seems last christmas was only yesterday
and I can still hear the church bells far away.
We walked through the markets, your hand in mine.
Our faces red, our lives entwined.
And in the spring the days got brighter
I held you close, you gripped me tighter.
Each morning the sun rose just for us.
You had my love, I had your trust.
As summer came, it got warmer
we took off our clothes, close to the water
and swam in the lake near your house.
I had eyes for no one else.
In the Autumn we ran through the leaves,
as they dive bombed the ground from the trees.
We drank soup as the weather got colder.
I imagined us together, older.
But when the cold weather moved in again,
you began to notice my best friend.
So that was the end.
It's Christmas eve now and you're in his arms.
You said you were sorry and meant me no harm.
So I walk through the markets without you
and in the distance I hear the bells.
Author notes
I don't normally write rhyming poems, but I felt like this one needed it. This poem is loosely based on events in my own life, but not current ones.

differenet from what I'm use to- not bad, but different. Took me a couple readings to adjust to the style, but I enjoyed it. Simple, honest- a story well told, started well, ended well.
The 2nd to off stanza is... just off, to me at least. Maybe it's just me- and I could change my mind with a third reading.
Happy holidays, and I'm glad to see your writing again. -

This is lovely and sad. My best friend went and married the guy I was in love with, but he cheated on her, and gave her VD, so karma takes care of those kinds of things, just give it time.
