POEtic Legend

Twas in my youth, it occurs to me,
I met a maiden named Annabel Lee,
who allowed my imagination to roam free -
and my poetic soul to grow.

My fragile heart broke upon our meeting,
our relationship was fated as fleeting,
for on that day too she answered Death's greeting -
and caused my tears to flow.

So did a wondrous journey start,
in the shadow of a tell tale heart,
where the black cat sometimes played a part -
in this magical whimsical show.

At times so beseeched I would walk the shore,
where the raven lamented the Lady Lenore,
and the red death tallied life's cruel score -
all within my candle's glow.

I sought treasure with a small gold bug,
as a cask dispensed its lethal drug,
while physicians by patients were locked away snug -
and the pendulum swung quite slow.

In adulthood now with mind's eye shining,
oft in the evening after dining,
I'll sit before a warm fire reclining -
while outside the cold winds blow.

In this way escaping the drifting snow,
revisiting tales I both love and know,
re-reading the legendary works of Poe -
the brilliant Edgar Allan Poe.

It has been a long time since I last read any Poe but this poem definately has the Poe rhythm and flow to it. It's a rhythm that once started, takes me easily through a poem of any length with ease. Congratulations on winning a gold wih this one as it is well and truly deserved. I'd like to read more from you in this vein as this is a wonderful tribute

Oh my god! You actually put a huge grin across my face and you made my heart light in my chest! The references here were brilliant! They made me happy every time I came across one! As I read, I had to slow myself down because I just wanted to read and read and read this lovely poem! The very ending is magnificent, tying in the theme he used for Annabel Lee at the end and mentioned "her" in the beginning! Wonderful! There was no moment in this poem that left me wanting. Your usage of poetic tools were amazing and enjoyable! I loved it immensely!
