I walked through the huge old oak door
Reaching up to the latch on tip toe
It would swing open with a bit of a creak
In to the hush of peace I would go
The space inside would look truly vast
To a small eight year old girl like me
Big pillars would hold up arches of stone
And it felt like a safe place to be
In low light of the stained glass windows
Past wooden pews all shiny and worn
Toward the altar so white and bright
Stood an angel bowing on a horn
Opposite to the angel was an eagle in flight
All golden with a book on its wings
Flowers would be placed around everywhere
And rows of candles where the choir sings
I would make my way over to the crib
By the altar steps and to the right
Next to the small altar for the ladies
Where the nun’s sometimes prayed all night
The stable would be waiting all ready
With a bright gleaming star up above
A manger prepared for its precious load
Jesus, God’s son, sent to teach us love
I would kneel there, fascinated for ages
Gazing at Mary and her tranquil face
At all the animals surrounding her
In this magical, most holy place
Every day I would go to this crib
To see if baby Jesus was laid on the hay
Anxiously wanting to see him there
And having to wait for Christmas Day

this was a very nice poem. This is going to be such a hard contest to judge! Thanks for entering my contest. Sorry it's taking me so long to judge, but as you may be able to imagine, it takes a while to read so many poems and pick out the very best. Merry belated christmas!

Thanks for your comment Cathy. I used to live only yards from the church and loved to go in there to the children's corner to read the books or use the crayons and pictures to colour in. No one seemed to mind and churches were always open in those days.
