Before There Was Christmas

The kings of Oak and Holly
meet atop the Solstice hill

the Oak King slays the Holly
to release the winter's chill

the light fades
and darkness rules

Holly, ever the green, has stolen life
and cast a spell of white

Oak has shed his leaves like tears
and bare bones shiver in taunting wind

but the bale fires burn
on Solstice eve

and Oak will turn the tide

in the morn the Sun will rise
and light will be reborn

and pagan hearts will breathe a sigh
and bid the dark of night goodbye

the King of Oak again will rule
as Holly bids goodbye at Yule
