Perennial Grace

Your handiwork appeared that spring in your place,
long suffering reminders of lost love’s face.
They bounced with the breeze and betrayed no warning.
Joyous jonquils so out of place in mourning.

The earth and sky and rain
conspire to assuage my pain,
sending forth the perennial yellow faces
that bow to the breeze and bend to God’s graces.

When October’s chill makes daffodils mere memory,
the purple buddleia proclaims its hospitality.
A monarch sitting lightly on that swaying flower
sends forth a miraculous, healing power.

By nature’s example do I learn
to emulate the daffodil and to discern,
To bow to the wind, to heaven send my cry
and to imitate the gentle butterfly.

Now when the daffodils in spring do wave and dance
I nod and silently thank Creation for another chance
To see the daffodils march along the lawn in your place
And gently remind me of love’s eternal face.
