N.Y. State of Mind

Christmas Eve you'll find me here
Cramped up in this cell
Where drunks dry out in slow degrees
On their way to hell
In voices of a hallelujah chorus
Their sad, sad tales to tell
While I dream of you in our decline
It's where we both now dwell

I played the game out on the streets
My credibility like deuces wild
My gut reaction to it all
Was in my own unique style
So Merry Christmas babe we're on our way
There'll be no stopping us now
Just you an' me can take this world
We don't need no sacred cow

In this town the buildings touch the sky
The cars are all limousines
With rockstars sitting in the back
Fuelled on dope an' gasoline
It is a place or so I'm told
Where young hopefuls come to pray
But if you're old you're out of luck
There's no room for you to stay

The promises we made fell apart
Like a house of cards and all our dreams
And just like water down the drain
They disappeared with all our schemes
So many Christmas Eves have passed since then
The years now tattered and torn
Just like the clothes I'm forced to wear
Along with all the jeers and all the scorn

We used to be the young Turks then
Our heads all filled with pride
The king and queen of all we surveyed
Yet we watched it slip and slide
Even after the band played the final song
We danced on without a care
And drifted away to other things
As the music faded in the air

Now the NYPD blues sing out
And the sirens scream out their refrain
O holy night, you poor dumb f*ck
It's Christmas Eve again

I'm just a hobo out of luck
A bedroll beneath my head
You're just a two buck whore I heard
In this cell where I live instead
So Merry Christmas to you babe
I hope you're doing well
As for me who now gives a toss
I'm now caught up in this living hell

I could have made it to the top
I could have been a major star
But you bled me dry of all my luck
And left me covered in these scars
My dreams I wore just like a coat
A many technicoloured thing
Now hangs in tatters around my soul
Along with all my other sins

Now the NYPD blues sing out
And the sirens scream out their refrain
O holy night, you poor dumb f*ck
It's Christmas Eve again...

Unfortunately you did not do what I asked and therefore I will have to DQ. Though I know some people were having troubles with it. So if you were let me know or if you didn't understand what I wanted from you then also let me know. Although I still don't understand why people don't ask in the first place... either way let me know what is up. Feel free to enter a new poem however, or if you can simply follow the instructions given you I will allow you to re-enter this one. Thanks for your entry anyhow.

what happened to the rhyme scheme in the 8th stanza? it doesn't match the rhyme scheme utilized throughout the rest of the piece...

I was so impressed that you stuck with the rhyme scheme and made it work throughout the piece, at least up until that point... creative, dark, self deprecating, what about this piece is NOT to like?

    clever indeed...

I am very impressed with this indeed. It hadn't occurred to me that anyone would add some extra verses to the immortal song (or indeed a whole new alternative version). You will not go unrewarded.
