Gregorian or Julian? Why not BOTH?

(to be sung to the tune of “The seven joys of Mary!”)

Oh, “Christmas comes but once a year”
The proverb says (How nice!)
But there are those for whom it’s clear
That Christmas comes round twice!
That Christmas comes round twice, my friends,
And happy may we be!
And God bless all of us who sing
Around the Christmas tree!

And wherefore should it not be so,
When winter frosts are cruel,
Then what can set the heart aglow
More than the joys of Yule?
More than the joys of Yule, my friends,
And happy may we be!
And God bless all of us who sing
Around the Christmas tree!

And when the storms of life wax strong
How better bid them cease
Than sing once more the angels’ song
Of goodwill and of peace?
Of goodwill and of peace, my friends,
And happy may we be,
And God bless all of us who sing
Around the Christmas tree!

So friends, I beg you, drive away

Grim thoughts about recession,

And let each countenance display

A glad Yuletide expression!

A glad Yuletide, expression, friends,

And hqppy may we be,

And God bless all of us who sing

Around the Christmas tree!

And raise a festive glass or two,
You’ll find no better reason,
And with Christ’s birth I wish to you
A double festive season,
A double festive season, friends,
And happy may we be!
And God bless all of us who sing
Around the Christmas tree.

Author notes

For reasons with which I shall not bore you, the original Julian calendar (as worked out by Julius Caesar) and the Gregorian Calendar (a new improved version worked out under the auspices of Pope Gregory XIII and introduced in most of Europe in 1582 - 1751 in the UK) are now 13 days out of step with each other...But some communities still use the Julian, at least for their church calendars... and as a result, I have to celebrate Christmas twice over!

I have to sing this song each year at various entertainments, and add each time verses referring to topical events and/or the venue and those present. Clearly, most of these would make little sense to a general audience... however, I have now added in one of those written for Christmas 2008/9, which I think is relevant to us all!

    Very nice, and well done.

I can't say I'd be all that unhappy to celebrate Xmas twice, since it IS my favorite holiday.

I hope life is treating you better now, or soon will be. Thanks for entering, and Happy Holidays.

Sorry... it was Gregory XIII in the 16th century. Gregory the Great (the "Non Angli sed Angeli" one), lived 1000 years earlier.

This is a good poem ...

and yes, it's fine. Jesus is the reason for the season, so there's no need to worry about stating it. I just get tired of the trite God is good poems that never say anything new or different. This one is fine, and actually, it's very well done.

Thanks for entering, and Happy Holidays.

    Dear Vera,

Beautiful poem you've done here Vera! It even had the bulkheads of my seasonal depression straining.LOL And that is a good thing.

Things are a bit better here. I will get my pension in two or three months. I should be able to find some kind of remunerative work until then. It appears the rumors of my untimely demise were specious, at best.

I was browsing through Christmas contests and I came upon this one, and glad I did.

    Wishing you...

    (1)The merriest of Christmases.
    (2)A Special Christmas blessing.
    (3)Warm fuzzy feelings.
    (4)Health and happiness.
    (5)All the above.

If you chose #5, you are exactly right!

    Much Love,
    John-USA
