Ennui set in early
as soon as the organ quieted
and the hard plied wood seats
took hold;
and the sermon thanked the choir
we nodded and I kept nodding into
drowsing "amens", remotely heard "hallelujah"
nodding into spiritual stupor before praise;
and my eyes held the memory
perhaps in colored reverses,
stories in stained glass
and the scene filled with eyes
a forest of eyes,'neath branches
'pon twigs and leaves, all over
eternal Eden all eyes;
and in dreamy reprise, the story of mankind
had a new revealing; holding breath
waiting and hoping, perhaps this time
the fruit would not be so tempting.

stunning
Thank you for taking time to look and write. Your response to the prompt is stunning to me. From ennui through drowsing into spiritual stupor, and my eyes.. into dreamy reprise, this clever poem loops and circles and finally settles on a hope /perhaps this time the fruit would not be so tempting/ But of course it will be. Very well done, thank you.
