From the nights he spent screaming
At us from one room to another.
We formed an unbreakable bond.
The kind of relationship
That no one could ever come between.
We hid together under the table,
We ate together in the basement,
We slept in the same room,
Just so he wouldn’t hurt us.
So he wouldn’t hurt me.
You always took the thrashing…
You always ended up with the broken bones
You ended up with the broken heart.
No matter how much I pleaded with you
To let me take the punishments
For the things we hadn’t done,
You always said no.
“I can’t let him do this to you”
You could have,
You just didn’t.
There is a difference.
You forced yourself to be strong for me.
You knew that weakness would get us no where.
So many times, he would come in at night
Expecting it to just be me asleep in my room,
And every time you rose up from the floor,
He knew he wouldn’t get to me.
There were times when you weren’t around
That I was left to face him on my own.
Through all the nights that you were there,
I knew I didn’t need to be afraid.
You took so much for me,
But never anything from me.
You took his anger,
You took the abuse.
You took all of the pain
Just so I wouldn’t have to.
It’s a sacrifice
That is comparable to no other.
When you know someone
Is willing to give their life
Simply to let you keep yours.
But there were so many times
That I would have gladly taken your place,
Bound to what ever cards were dealt.
We both knew that like a bad poker player,
I’d have folded and given in to his demands.
But you, you never went down without a fight.
It was the final call, and you were still determined to win.
He stole your dignity,
He took away your pride,
He took your innocence…
Because you wouldn’t let him get to mine.
How do you repay someone that has
Laid their life on the line for you?
Night, after night, after lonely night
Just so you wouldn’t get hurt.
“Knowing you love me is more than enough”
How do you express gratitude?
When you know that three little words
Will never amount to the years of pain
That you took away from me…
I can’t give you back a childhood,
I can’t undo what’s already been done.
What can I do to prove to you?
That I would give my life for your own to be saved
Like you did for me on so many nights.
Writing to you of how much you mean
Would only dry the ink from my pens,
They would become little plastic reminders
Of a type of sacrifice I cannot return.
I cannot speak of your importance,
Due to lack of words in the English language.
My throat would become sore
And my vocal chords would ware thin.
“I’m your brother, your love is enough”
You’re not only my brother,
You’re my protector,
My Shoulder to lean on,
My “angel in disguise”
My best friend,
And literally…
The reason I’m alive…
Someday, I hope you see that.

so... basically. This is about my brother, Jake. in case you didn't get that. He is the greatest brother one could EVER dream of having. If i'd custom made my own brother, no one could ever have been better. I love him more than i love life. I owe him my own life after all.

To repay him you live happily. he does sound like me alot as you have said. If I were him what make me very happy is seening that you have grown up to be a remarkable women and that you will live a life you really deserve. In some people may be angels but us people only wish to see that the sacrifices we make help build something far greater for another. Go be happy myfriend and live the life that people like him fought to give you with every ounce of there heart and soul

I had to hold back tears reading this one. You're brother sounds like a very brave man. It always makes me tear up when I see something that shows me just how much someone can love somebody. Doing whatever it takes to protect someone or something they love. You probably DO have the best bro in the world. This was a really great poem. I guess the only question I have is kind of a personal one...Does he not see that he is all these things to you? Surely he does. Anyways. Love it.

I would say I know how you feel in this, but I really can't. I was on the opposite end, as we both know. This is breathtaking to a new level. Your love and tenderness show in this write and I am sure that your brother already knows how grateful you are.
It does disgust me that both you and him had to go through what you did, but you've both come out of it as amazing people. I do not even know him and I can tell he is someone special by the way you speak of him.

This poem is SO intense with emotion. I feel like I was there watching this happen. You have yourself a great brother. I never really experienced anything this bad as a child but I know how it is to give up a part of your life for someone else to get better than you. -
