Your silence is as the flakes of snow
that drift effortlessly down
and silently join forces
until everything is covered
and our senses are overwrought
trying to remember and discern
how things used to be before
our world was inundated and chilled.
Your silence is also as the icicles
that come and form unannounced
yet become as it were daggers to the heart
threatening to to put asunder the tender ties
we used to have in more hospitable times.
Why is it that the dead freeze of winter
has overtaken our hearts and lives
to form a wedge between the two of us
and to numb us from the feelings
which were so strong and vibrant?
Now I look out and I see
Only the obliterating whitewash
of the uncaring frozen tundra
reinforced by the treacherous daggers
lined up as stoic sentinels
guarding the outer walls
from allowing access to the home-fires
once crackling with delight within,
now reduced, also to smoldering embers.
