Sometimes we really fly too fast
to actually see the true picture.
Often, I should have counted to ten
before I spewed out my stricture.
Sometimes that pause was all that it took
to completely change my perspective;
that let me know the plan is okay
and in no way truly defective.
If we show impatience in our lives
how can we, in truth, claim virtue?
In most of the things you do daily
to pause for a bit won’t hurt you.
Few question that patience is indeed
a most desirable quality.
It should be applied with fairness in
times of seriousness and frivolity.
With poetry, it’s the same way.
If I do not make my Muse speed
she rewards me with a smoother rhyme
that for most is easier to read.
The difference in the time it takes
to fashion a diamond from coal
is worth all the time it requires
if a true gem is your final goal.
Author notes
“In poetry, as in ‘most everything else, impatience is a non-virtue.”
