Runaway

Missing image
  Tears streaming down her face,
as mascara stains her cheeks.
Her clothes, her heart, in tatters.

Innocence stolen, and
purity ravaged, damned
tarnishing her lonely soul.

Poor, unfortunate child,
believing that she deserved
such a sordid undoing.

All she wanted was to love,
and be loved in return,
though it seemed she had asked for pain.

For, on that night, he raped her,
with none but the wind as witness.
No one there, to hear her screams

As he plunged into her youth,
and pillaged the core, as he
tore through her most sacred space.

And something once reserved
for the sacristy of love
had lost any meaning for her.

Left with no choice
but to run from the past,
she flees her home, far away

From memories of this ghost town,
for, after such desecration,
all she knows of is pain.

She braves the fierce winds,
seeking solace from the storm,
unsure of where to turn.

She searches for sanctuary,
amid cold, unfeeling angels,
wearing masks of stone.

Her plight is not uncommon,
but they ignore her silent plea,
for they know not that she is lost

And that the wild woman on the run
is but a girl, seeking refuge
from the world and its cruelties.

Author notes

Picture-inspired #28 for Tarja's contest.

I have been fortunate enough to not have ever been in this position, though several close to me have. The horror and fear of rape are known only to its survivors, and I don't expect that I will ever be able to understand, nor will I ever be able to accurately capture those feelings in mere words. But unlike many, at least I can say that I have tried to understand such pain, such fear, and the need to rebuild their lives after the trauma.

To anyone who has been through such a horrible degradation, I am here for you.

in this you go, he raped her, i really think you should have put it in a round about way, but other than that great work, it has a strong feeling all the way through thanks for your entry

I can relate to this poem, and you've done a wonderful job capturing the pain and trauma rape survivors endure. This was a beautiful yet painful poem, and though you may not have experienced it yourself you have done a fantastic job of capturing the emotions. I really like this piece, the imagery is fantastic and the emotions hit me. Good job! Good luck in the contest!

Wow... even though this is not what I had imagined the story behind this picture to be, I have to say I was quite taken with the emotion and detail you put into this. It was simply amazing. Thank you so much for adding this dramatic poem. Good luck.
