She could be an older sister, perhaps a mother:
She, who lives next door, through the thicket,
compelling me to brave weather just to be near her
by taking simple little treats I know her hands cannot form;
Pretty cakes and cookies, homemade bread, a crochet afghan
spill from my little red basket as skip over because I know
her husband works long hours and her bird talks back to her
books, meant to fill those hours were best thoughts
until I learned she could not read, so I read them to her;
stories about growing up in Maine, poetry about ships and sailing on Atlantic’s leap and historical romances about women on widow’s walks
I must cultivate a younger friend to take over should she outlive me,
perhaps do this for both of us when our fingers curl up on themselves
and our feet are no longer good for walking away when things are easier shared by two, or three times a reason to nurture friendship’s path.

OKay, you did it again ....

I am crying my eyes out....I wish I had a true friend like you (living close) I am blessed to have you from afar...This is such a treasure ...I think what touched me most was the unselfishness as you speak of finding a younder person to take your place should she outlive you
You are a delight...
Lynda

You are such a magnificent, empathetic Soul. How fortunate she is to have you near her. Good luck in Lynda's contest, Sweetie.

You know well the gift of life that friendship brings to breath. The way the appreciation and joy flows both ways in the sharing of the gift and the need to keep it alive as generation overlaps and moves into the next. Love, Tom B.
