The Final Threshold

This feeling so strange.
Never felt before.
So strong it wells up within her chest.
A twinkle in his eye, the soft strong grazing of his hand across her back.
It’s more than a feeling.
More, a knowing:
His love is boundless.
Their connection is real.
There’s something within them, drawing them near.
There’s this deep forbidden longing.
One that has long been “out of bounds.”
She’s always accepted this law set down,
And longed for nothing but the wait.
But now, somehow, she has broken through,
The years of constant reminding,
Of finger wagging.
The moment lies in dormancy waiting for a spark to ignite.
No telling how long the two must wait.
“Until we’re ready” “we’ll know”
They say
But they don’t what waits beyond.
Their innocence newly cracked and chipped along the edges.
They speak in hushed whispers in backseats and messages.
They speak of their moments of heat and flesh.
As if they were crimes so sneaky and new.
Their naïve glances and snickers and pinches.
The feeling wells and grows within.
Culminating in an ever-new longing.
Something more: more time, more contact, more “newness”, more firsts.
Is that all it is?
A groping for more?
The emotions underlay the lust.
The bond embodied in the entwined.
She muses on the stipulations, the preparations that must be made.
Can she make them? Is it too much?
So many do it. But does that make it right?
So many years of negativity imbued into her fragile mind.
It’s hard for her to break the norms that have been set for her,
As much as she might want to.
Her past infractions we accompanied by such a rush.
So why not this one? Why not take this leap and feel the triumph?
But she knows this is different.
More than a feeling, but an awakening.
A breaking apart and giving away of something held so tightly,
It can’t even be seen.
It’s not that he’s not worthy – he is!
But the thoughts brought on by such an act may be enough to break her.
The final chips of innocence removed.
I don’t know if she can bear it.
