I stepped forward
But my words were to be lost to the lips of time
Which were sealed that fateful night
I watched in horror
But my trembling hands could not grab the horse’s reins
Could not bring pity into their hardened hearts
We were lost to the mercy of the world
And faced cruel, heartless night,
With our hearts in our hands
My tears did not move them
My swollen lips moved soundlessly
They were set on their mad duty
To carry out their rites
They threw you on the earth
Hostile to the blood
And dragged you to your feet
My lips stopped moving
Inside me, it became cold—
An early winter storm whirling around my heart
The beating of my heart was the funeral hymn
Of your procession up to the gallows
My heart was in your hands
There since the day I had lost it to you
And I knew I had lost you now too
When your soulful eyes fled this desolate place
They faded into lifeless grey
As the last of you slipped away, your hands tightened around my heart
And I knew you were both gone forever
So as you left me on this earth
I turned my blackened eyes upon them
Who called themselves the men of God
And spoke the words they would forever fear
The terror sank into their eyes like freezing water
And they who spoke so boldly of the Devil
Fled from my rage
And feared for their eternal salvation
