Cat high-stepping
plunges paw through crust
becomes desperate
to shake off
soft underbelly
foreign to feel
when it's never been
outside
tasting snow.
Author notes
no, it is not about a cat

It certainly fits cat...and so many other experiences as well. Nicely crafted as usual.

i will comment again but so far this is the first poem to compel me to actually express my interpretation and see if it's near the intended mark. i feel that since obviously, thanks to your notes, this is not about a cat, this is about trying new things and expanding your horizons. "shake off soft underbelly" solidified that for me, cuz it makes me think of facing the fear of the unknown, whatever it may be, as in ignoring the butterflies in your stomach and plunging into something you're not familiar with, be it a party full of strangers or a new class or a new job or anything new really. although "becomes desperate to" just made me think that maybe this is more about the desperation to feel something new in life. either way, if i'm right or wrong, i'm impressed with how this made me think with such few lines. good job
