story(unamed)--chap 6

Chap. 6
Serenity sat back in her chair, questions swirling through her mind. Me? Really? I guess it kind of fits...
Finally, Jason broke the silence. “It’s true, Serenity, but there’s more if you want to know.”
Serenity hesitated, and then answered cautiously. “Yes…I would like that.”
“Okay, then we’ll continue on with the story.”
This time, Isabella was the one to explain. “The plan worked out really well. You guys had destroyed much of Rellark’s men and Malks. Rellark became furious. He fought back as hard as he could with his dragon and his armies. He managed to kill five people—leaving you guys down to fifteen people—but, thankfully, never succeeded in killing you.
“For fifty years you rebelled against Rellark. One day, a hundred years ago, you and Rivon were hunting in the Kothari Mountains—”
Serenity sat up straighter and exclaimed, “Wait! You mean Jason? How is that possible?”
“Uh…yeah…about that…,” Jason explained—or tried to—uncomfortably. “Remember when we were in my house, and I tried to tell you what I was? Well, I’m an elf. And as you know,—or maybe not—elves are immortal, but are still vulnerable to injuries of the flesh.”
“And you felt that you didn’t tell me this why?”
“I was getting to that before we were attacked,” mumbled Jason.
“Anyway,” stated Isabella, “you guys went hunting with Shinku and your dragon, Esmera. And yes, Serenity, a dragon, a dragon of your very own. She was an emerald dragon, with scales that gleamed like the morning sun. Her eyes were a deep, radiant blue hue. And her voice, like bells, gentle and vibrating. And in battle, fierce and swift while only her voice was gentle.
“While you guys were preoccupied, a dozen or so Malks ambushed you. Three Malks hit Jason in the head and knocked him out. Another six Malks took down Shinku, breaking his left wing and spraining his right leg, leaving him in agonizing pain.
“So then it was down to you and Esmera. A stray arrow found its way to Esmera’s heart. When it hit her—instead of killing her—she disappeared, and you along with her.”
“When I regained conscious, you and Esmera were no where to be found. My eyes brimmed with tears as I searched some nearby bodies among me to see if I could find you guys. I didn’t, and I assumed the Malks had taken you to Rellark,” added Jason.
Isabella continued when Jason finished. “While Jason was searching, a snow-white fox padded up to Jason and told him that the magic used to create the force that would hopefully defeat Rellark was very strong. She said that since you were their leader, you and Esmera were granted with an extra life. So if you of Esmera died, then both of you—since you were bonded partners—would disappear and be reborn in your second life.
“The fox—her name was YoKo—was great friends with Esmera, and she knew where you and Esmera went. She told Jason where Esmera was, but not you, until the right moment; she didn’t want Rellark to find out.
“So then, about three months ago, YoKo told Jason where you were, and he tracked you down and brought you back here. And that is how you are sitting here right now.”
After Isabella finished, Serenity sat, pondering what she had just heard. Serenity had several questions, but hesitated to ask. Finally, after several awkward seconds, Serenity spoke up. “When I disappeared, where they any others that rebelled against Rellark?”
For the first time, Jason looked grim and sad. “When you were gone, Rellark took that as an advantage and tracked and killed them all.”
“What?!”
“Hold on, I’m not done. He did track and kill them all. . . except for about five. They outwitted him. However, Rellark was too clever; he killed two and one’s dragon. To this day, only three people, including you are left—two elves and you, a human—and two dragons.”
Isabella stood up and yawned. “Okay, it is late and I’m sure all of us are tired. Let us go to bed and see each other tomorrow.”
“Wait,” begged Serenity. “Please, just one more question.”
Jason looked at Serenity and Isabella looked at Jason. Isabella gave a curt nod and sat back down. “The only thing I want to know right now is where Esmera is.”
Isabella looked shocked, then guilty. “Oh!” she exclaimed. “I was getting too caught up in the story that I completely forgot about Esmera! Come, she waits for us.”
Isabella stood up and beckoned Jason and Serenity to get up.
Jason led the way out of the room and they went through the throne room and out into the hall leading to Esmera.
