How do I go from a houseful
of seven kids and a wreck of wrapping paper
to this shush of slippered feet
walking in circles
while a strafing voice
drones that being a widow
means you can decorate
any danged way you please?
It’s all too neat.
I have bought myself mystery presents:
You know, those brown-bagged gifts
that didn’t sell for the last ten years.
I will be surprised, delighted, let down
like the year Santa forgot what I asked for
and brought me another baby instead.
Can I pretend they are here?
Shall I fake forgetting a holiday?
Will I still wake up at jingle of dawn?
The lady, across the way, whose house,
bulging like an egg sack on mother spider
who has paths that look like legs, dances
a tarantella with comings and goings,
and ho ho hos, and carolers who know
her and her hot chocolate.
Perhaps I will buy myself a present
for every one I wished I had.
I’ll unwrap them all and joyfully cry:
“Why, thank you, just what I wanted.”
or
“How could you?”
and then clean up two parcels’ bows
because no one else is there to do it for me.
Author notes
Ah, we can be so busy with business, we never notice an unbroken path.

Wow!
Now that sure is a different take on the idea of December 7th. Quite a change from thinking just about Pearl Harbor. Very creative. Best of luck in the contest.
