fire lily:  flower of the flame

This is my first book of poetry!! The title, fire lily, refers to a wildflower, native to South Africa, which only blooms after a fire and rises from the soil in a dance of red bells – proof, that love, and only love, can change a landscape of ashes into a garden. Some examples from my book:

vase

on the table a glass vase
fills with dawn: daffodil,

corn flower, poppy and a few rays
of anemone. I recall
mornings

when there were more
long-stemmed
colours

than my heart
could hold

An excerpt from the Introduction written by Zayra Yves:
San Francisco, California 2007

http://www.zayrayves.com/

“In this passionate collection of poetry Nicolette van der Walt shares with her readers the intimacy of her very marrow. Nicolette is a woman of many gifts and strengths but of all those wonders, what stands out most is her grace. She is truly as graceful as a flower, as sensuous as a dancer and as passionate as the fire; she is what she writes. The poet and the poem are one as they dance together on the page from the seed of what is intensely personal and private to the core of all humanity burning with it the powerful yearning for union with the beloved. The rapture of her poetry will light a candle of beauty in your soul and open your heart to burn beyond the flame.”

~ Zayra Yves, author of Empty as Nirvana and Ordinary Substance, as well as the audio CD's Crowned Compassion and Sleep in the Sea Tonight with Me.

Back cover reviews are by Wanda Brayton (Night Hope), Marc Creamore, Brian Douthit and Joe Faybish – all of them accomplished and published poets (see author’s notes). A big thank you to Zayra, Wanda, Marc, Joe, & Brian for sharing their talent and their hearts with me, and to every one of you here who has been so supportive of me and my poetry through the years! And of course, also to the one: the fire, the flame.

from love’s mouth

I came to know the vocabulary
that invented me:

it’s the poetry
in universe, god in good
and his plan in the planets;

the gift in forgiveness,
and all the ways of gain
in always loving
again

it’s the light for reading love
with my whole body

and the arm in warmth
that binds the u and i
in union

Author notes

Excerpts from the back cover reviews:

“You see, it is not a pen she uses. She breathes down a flute and brushes atop a canvas and chisels her way into marble. Nicolette is beyond an artist, Nicolette is a creator.”
– by Yossi Faybish, author of Sweet Drops, Bitter Drops & More Like Sweet, More Like Bitter

“Nicolette Van Der Walt's poetry possesses some of the most beatifically beautiful imagery ever created in the English language. She holds the reader in rapt attention with a delicate grace that stirs the dew touched petals of the heart, causing them to open with her metaphoric caress.”
– by Marc Creamore, author of Tea Leaves And Denim, Bleaker Street, Corridors and The Wrong Side of the Curtain

“These poems leave one pleasantly gasping for breath due to their sheer beauty and depth of grace.”
– by Brian Douthit, author of Perfectly Said: when words become art

“Nicolette’s writing is astonishing in its depth and simplicity. Her talent is undeniable, her magnificent heart and soul are irresistible, her compassion is infinite. She displays originality at its finest.”
– by Wanda Lea Brayton, author of Swanee Sighs.

    Nicolette,
    While searching and reading through your poetry
    of many fine writes, I came across your book that was published.What an amazing accomplishment and lovely contributions you give to us and to whom ever is fortunate enough to find such gifts.
    Sometimes I'm in awe of your talent wondering where do I sit to be close to stellar brilliance.
    As close as I can.
    Hopefully the inspiration and the wisdom and the
    expertise will find me and tap my shoulder and a voice will say the writer will show you how to shine.
    Pay attention and listen.
    Thank you my friend for being whom you are
    and for sharing the creativity from your soul.
    Sunshine to you.
    Love Peace

    amazing ...

    "from love's mouth" teaches me not how to look at life, but how to see life ... your wise guidance is breathtaking ...

    from the first time I read one of your poems in a contest I co-judged, I was seduced by something that passes through you and that is out-of-the-ordinary ...
    I was happy to learn about your first book being published ... congratulations ...

    Having read your poetry here, I've no doubt that your book is wonderful. I love the excerpts and yes, I do belive we both write from the heart and truly know that is what makes poetry great...that human feel to it...the thought of the reader while reading the piece that it was written for them and them only. Congratulations on the book. Interested in swaping autographed copies?

    Simply Nicolette!

    Each lovely comment on this page reveals an ever unfolding melody of a most beautiful deep water woman! Nicolette's pen sparkles through tears, flames through love, laughs through each petal of heart she unfolds. From miles away, I've felt her effervescent softness enfolding bits and pieces of me in beauty and warmth I can barely fathom.

    What it means to glisten, what a song means sung under one's breath, what amaranth means to a lily, to hear the melodies of stone and water, and the etching of love under the lace canopy of a tree....

    To read Nicolette is to touch the wonder of these things.

    Congratulations, Nicolette!

    ~~~~~~~~~~
    Zayra, your work and words here capture infinite loveliness and beauty. I can't say enough.
    to any of you who are considering, the words in this book are genuine and sincere as the one who wrote them. Many and most who have read her, immediately feel an eloquence and gracefulness that is so unusual. Her words from top to bottom are passionate and breathe. this is a wonderful accomplishment to be etched out and read for years to follow, I, me and all of us here, are very proud of her
