They say we can cable Washington instantly STOP They say they will string wires down by the railroad tracks STOP I heard it referred to as tiny dots and drawn-out dashes STOP Electricity makes it all happen STOP But someday I think in the far distant future STOP Wives and mothers and sisters and lovers will dread the neat new blue uniforms and the methodical bikes with their horns and their bells STOP They may even feel a twisted happy relief as death passes their door for another STOP But neither tears nor sorrow nor a twisted elated happiness will remove the name of a husband, son, brother or lover from the grisly chiseled typeset page STOP They all will be lost and buried STOP Destroyed then as now deep in our many wars STOP So try to stand firm in the blood of the lamb STOP The future’s fear is the telegram STOP Merry Christmas STOP
