"A Girl's Greatest Friend (Princess Buttercup)"

I've tried to put onto paper
The enormity that you meant to me
But words do little justice
To the lifetime of love and memories you gave me

A small girl's biggest delight
A pony to ride, she could take flight
And if she closed her eyes and dreamed
She could also be a Unicorn...
...In just the right light

An ever standing pillar of strength and warmth
An ever steady pace, that never faltered or shied
I'll never forget those strong brown eyes
Who were always the surest guide

And even when your body began
To turn away from you
When the once strong, lithe limbs
Began to gray and wan
You always kept that youthful sparkle
And a will to carry on

I'll never forget the smell
Of crushed grass and clover
That framed your sweet face
Or the feel of your soft mane
Run through my finger tips

You held on so long,
I think, just for me
I'll selfishly admit
I wasn't ready to let you go
But when I looked into your eyes
They held a promise,
To always watch over me
And to forever be by my side

And even though
The tears still fall
And I've yet to see an end
You always were, and forever will be
A little girl's greatest friend

Author notes

I lost one of the most important pieces of my life yesterday. True, she was "only" a horse. But her death marked a huge point in my life, the end of my "childhood" memories.. She was more than just a horse..

As an expression of love and feelings for your friend and pet horse this is a very good memory to leave for her.
As a poem it could do with some revision as not everything is as it should be.
Perhaps now, that time has elapsed you may wish to make this more pleasing poetically by tightening the rhythm and rhyming structure.

This was so absolutely heart-wrenching, I love the way you wrote it in the style of a little girl's thoughts and images of her new best friend -

and as someone below me said, animals simply do not live long enough .... thank you for sharing this with us

Horses and dogs do not stay with us long enough, I think they are angels sent to comfort and love us.

Sorry for your loss and it is wonderfully crafted of your heart for your horse, lovely name you gave her, and yes I believe you saw her give you a message in her eyes. Blessings.

    Oh, this is so touching!

    How your beautiful horse held on for you. Yes, this is true. It is our love for them that keeps them hanging on! What an amazing tribute to your Princess Buttercup. I loved the image this stanza gave me;

    "I'll never forget the smell
    Of crushed grass and clover
    That framed your sweet face
Or the feel of your soft mane
    Run through my finger tips"

I am sorry for your loss, but Princess Buttercup is with you always - a magical Unicorn Angel, watching over you. They stay with us forever like she told you with her eyes!

Thank you for your entry and for sharing with us here at Allpoetry!

This is such a sad poem; bitter sweet though, for the memories described are happy.

    "I'll never forget the smell
    Of crushed grass and clover
    That framed your sweet face
Or the feel of your soft mane
    Run through my finger tips"

Beautiful imagery. I can smell her soft face and feel the hair on my fingertips...

    "You held on so long,
    I think, just for me
    I'll selfishly admit
I wasn't ready to let you go
But when I looked into your eyes
    They held a promise,
    To always watch over me
And to forever be by my side"

This part left me rather choked up. lol "But when I looked into your eyes/They held a promise,/To always watch over me" Beautiful. A very nice write. Well deserved trophies. :]

I really liked the first stanza. I can relate to it, because I can't really write about my cat right now, and nothing would do her justice. I also loved all of the emotion in this poem. Thank you for entering and good luck in my contest.

I'm crying... This was so wonderful... I have a horse and a pony and they mean the world to me. I know the day they die will be the most terrible moments of my life. They are my best friends in the world and the greatest pets I could ever ask for... truely bravo for this wonderful peice of work. It's once in a life time that poems like this make me cry as much as i am now. Bravo and many other joyous and happy words that I can't thinkl of right now

I'm sorry for your loss, this is a very touching poem. The description is lovely, flowing from magical youth through "gray and wan" of age. A wonderful tribute to your friend, "A small girl's biggest delight
A pony to ride, she could take flight
And if she closed her eyes and dreamed
She could also be a Unicorn...
    ...In just the right light"
