The Meaning Of Deity

A solar deity is a god or goddess who represents the sun.
All of nature existing as one.
The word deity is derived from the latin word deus,
and a related word is divum meaning open sky.
Where all the energy of the atoms fly.
The Sanskrit terms div and diu means shine, sky and day.
All the life on Earth soaking up the sun's rays.
We live feeling grief and strife.
Forgetting to appreciate the burning ball of gas that gives us life.

Author notes

The English word "deity" derives from the Latin "deus," ("God"). Related are words for "sky": the Latin "dies" ("day") and "divum" ("open sky"), and the Sanskrit "div," "diu" ("sky," "day," "shine"). Also related are "divine" and "divinity," from the Latin "divinus," from "divus." The English word "God" comes from the Anglo-Saxon, and similar words are found in many Germanic languages (e.g. the German "Gott" — "God").

A solar deity (also heliolatry or sun worship), is a god or goddess who represents the sun, or an aspect of it. People have worshipped these for all of recorded history. Hence, many beliefs have formed around this worship, such as the "missing sun" found in many cultures. Sun worship is a possible origin of henotheism and ultimately monotheism.

I was thinking lately of what the term god or deity actually means. So, I did some research on the internet and thought I'd write another poem. My mind never rests.

Please tell me what you think

Good research! all words have such an interesting stories. Very interesting branch of Linguistics. and it is very interesting, how all ancient languages are interconnected, indicating our common ancestors..

  • Again interesting research you have done
If I may comment on the meaning of the word God "Theos" in ancient Greek which derives from the verb "Theo" which means fast
The ancient Greeks believed that all was created from two substances that exist in the Universe, one is called "meristi" and the other "sinehis"
Those two when they meet in the right time and right place create and give birth, this where chorochronous derives from

    You may find this intersting

Though it was a bit choppy this was just magnificent and well written. I appreciated the little inside track you included in the author's notes, I was able to understand this piece and get the deep meaning. Great job.

Coincidentally today I was watching a youtube video about Jesus and sun motifs you might find interesting:

    It's in 3 parts:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KeZB2EsPqGE
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmzailhVl-U
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6UdQxt7b24

It's kinda biased and alarmist but still really interesting

Wonderfully done and researched! Spirituality is one of my favorite subjects; add that to poetry and a winning combination is found. Perhaps you could have added a touch more of humanity to the verse, relating humankind's relationship with the sun.
