Mother dearest brushed her hair
carefully picked her underwear
kept her clean, safe, and warm
weathered her teenage angsty storm
Kissed and tucked her in at night
Even when things were not all right
Let her date boys of her own choosing
Though in the game of love she's losing
Taught her that looks were everything
But that her husband would not be her king
Sent her out into the street
Forlornly looking at her feet
To just look up and see a man
Who'd whistle at her from his van
That broke her heart in every way
And makes her cry on every day
Learned she couldn't trust any men
Though she fell in love now and then
And now she's old and all alone
because of the men she'd never known
Author notes
This poem explores the negative aspect of the lessons women learn from their mothers, for many of them learn all the wrong ones. It also explores the insecurities and childhood of women.

Awww- this is really sad- but that's because there's so much truth to it. I think you touched on an area about women that isn't talked about that often. Lovely poem. Thanks for entering it in the contest!

Very thought provoking. A lot of women do grow up seeing the negative situations that their mothers go through and end up doing the same things. Great flow to this piece and such a deep message. Love it! best of luck in the contest.
