Dry, ugly, and beautiful by day
But at night, a bright vibrant green.
Rabbits and rats clearer than noon
At midnight
Shrubs, pear cacti, and yucca
Stand like nuclear sentinels
In the freezing desert night.
Author notes
The contest called for brevity, so there you have it. I apologize if the spacing is off or whatnot. I'm on a PSP, which is like texting on a cell, so I'm not sure how it'll turn out. The piece is descibing the New Mexico desert at night through the ITAS, which is the thermal targeting system for the TOW missile system. The National Guard is using the ITAS (without the TOW) to detect illegal immigration and drug smuggling along the Mexican boarder.
