Kansas Back-Roads

I remember
a field of Kansas sunflowers.
Bridges flooded,
so we traveled back-roads
through Kansas
farmlands. After one hair-
pin curve--
a field of sunflowers.

Every turn
life throws at me;
again I
am flooded by their seeds and
yellow petals.

I have
built the farm, the field
and know
the farmer, wife, and kids.
The big
red barn with cattle,
pigs, and chickens.
How he
cleans the barn fall and spring
and spreads
the manure on his field
of sunflowers.

This field
brightens dark corners in
the house
of my soul--come winter,
come spring,
come summer, and fall.

I lived for short time in Kansas. My fondest memories of sunflowers, though, are the huge ones which grew next to my grandparents garage in southern Oregon.

Your poem is lovely, a beautiful, sentimental childhood memories. The last stanza is priceless

    very enjoyable...

...I enjoyed reading this poem very much. In its simplicity it describes a vivid scene, that is somewhat unusual being of sunflowers [my sister's favourite flower]. You paint a beautiful picture.

Then , I enjoy the meaning of the last four lines where the scene brightens the 'dark corners in the house of my soul'. Those lines have an impact and a deeper meaning to the sunflowers.
