Woodland Santa

Deep within the tall oak trees

mingled with the evergreens

sets a tiny cabin there

in the highest mountain fair.

It's snuggled in a highland clearing

nestled near a little stream.

Swirls of smoke rise from the chimney

climbing toward a soft moonbeam.

In this charming little dwelling

lives a quiet mountain man.

He toils away his nightly hours

working on his winter plan.

Then one night in late December

bundled up to chase the chill,

he sets out walking with his lantern

climbing up the snowy hills.

He scatters acorns, nuts and berries,

leaving salt licks on display.

Feeding all the woodland creatures,

working 'till the break of day.

He cares for all of God's creation.

This kindly gesture brings him peace;

to watch the birds, the deer and chipmunks

finding food in winter's fleece.

It's always intriguing to re-think traditional images, motifs, and icons in contemporary, 'real-world' terms. While never deviating too far from the familiar, the poem does put a new spin on the details. And it has an underlying current of gentleness that I find attractive. Well done.

Micol, thank you for your very kind comments and for the applause. I recently moved to the mountains and live in a hardwood forest which is the inspiration for the poem. I feel that I'm finally living where I was always intended to live and love the country life where I find peace. Thank you for choosing me for the silver trophy out of so many excellent entries. May your Christmas be the merriest!
