The Grand Show

Torn, broken.
You wish they could see.
What an actor you are!
They don't even notice.
You laugh and joke,
so maybe you won't cry.
Because you don't want to
shock them.
You couldn't bear the looks.
Keep acting, put on your show.
Let them applaud your performance,
your song and dance of outward normality.
No backstage passes,
no one peeking behind curtains.
They couldn't handle that reality.
They just watch the show,
taking the acting at face value.
When the curtain finally falls,
they won't stay to watch an empty stage.
Perhaps they will weep,
maybe ponder the drama they have seen.
All the more likely, they will turn to a
different stage, a new actor.
But for now the spotlight is on you.
So act.

Author notes

This is basically about someone who has put up a mask for everyone because they don't want to be pitied. (That was my inspiration, anyway.)

It's sad, how people put on masks like that, just so people won't realise how much pain they're really in... I've done it, I have friends who've done it, but somehow even with the masks we usually know the truth, there's just some things you can't keep from your best friends...
Great write, you wrote this story really well, I really like it.
Thanks for entering and good luck! =)

I can related to this...my dad was recently diagnosed with cancer and I work where he works...everyone is always asking about him and that's cool, but they also always ask how I'm doing. Even though I'm scared, I never let on. I don't want people to feel bad for me. I'm the same cheerful, fun-loving girl I've always been.
