It was August, 1981,
when the foul breath that belched
from Curtis Bay's industrial throats
pressed down upon us, as we drove
to the gasket shop and Domino Sugar,
where we labored. While en route,
my mind began to snore, when dad
sat behind the wheel of his pulpit, preaching
about God, the gospel, and some Book
in the Bible he referred to as Revelation.
Above the snores that thundered inside my head,
these lyrics from Rush, the rock group, whined,
"My mind is not for rent to any god or government."
Dad spun on, like a Michelin down Curtis Avenue,
explaining how--in the future--seven years of Great
Tribulation would plague our planet, God pouring
out judgment from His cup of wrath on populations,
who, at that time, will have turned away from Him
to worship some Serpent, his False prophet,
and Beast. What kind of myth is this? I thought.
In the gasket shop, later, at lunchtime,
that day, as I rested on my workbench,
tasting asbestos shavings--from gasket
making--on the filter of my Salem,
I smoked and swilled some Coke, contemplating
Christ--ignorant of His Second Coming, Salvation,
or any Great Tribulation, other than my own.
Yet I heard the pages of Scripture hollering at me,
so I read every "thine," "thou," and "thee" and every
who begot who, in 1982, from Genesis Chapter
One to Matthew Chapter Ten, where Jesus said,
"...Whoever confesses Me before men, him I will
also confess before My Father who is in heaven.
But whoever denies Me before men, him I will
also deny before My Father who is in heaven."
God's Word immediately pierced through my stronghold
of cowardice that strangled my heart: Fear that men
might mock muted my mouth from proclaiming,
"Jesus is Lord!"
But, then, by grace, God gave this coward Boldness
to declare to the night the name of His Son, Jesus.
Twenty-five years, like a vapor, now have passed,
since He gave this blind man's heart some sight.
However, still, "My mind is not for rent to any
god or government," for with His blood, my Savior
bought it; and only to Him my mind shall bow;
for Jesus, my Lord, the Son of God, is its owner now!

Brovo - a lovely 'speaking of faith'. I love these contests as they give me great pleasure to read of my Lord and of brothers and sisters in Christ. Your poem reads like a 'story', however it is one with which I can associate. Good luck. Frans
